Right now, just hoping to help set up journals for others to create articles in. Later, hope to be an academic contributor, even with my scanty credentials. Before discovering this Wiki, I had been editing at the English Wikipedia under the login name of hotfeba, as I continue to edit there under that name unless and until it gets me in trouble.

Current on-line studiesEdit

  • FEMA Emergency Management Institute
  • National Fire Academy (relatively inactive there now)

Prior academic workEdit

  • San Diego City College
  • 1987 Associate in Science with honors in Data Processing (Certificate of Achievement for high honors in major)
  • 1991 Associate in Arts with honors in Mathematics
  • University of San Diego
  • 1995 completed undergraduate major in Computer Science with Mathematics minor (did not graduate)

Also internships with Resolution Trust Corporation (1990) on receipt of a Minority Leaders Fellowship (sponsor: ARCO Foundation); and with Thomas H. Billingslea, Jr., (Chapter 13 Standing Trustee, United States Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of California) while attending the City College paralegal program in late 1990's.

Former Mensa International member.

From 1980 to the present, I have been a private tutor in various subjects. Speed reading allows me to tutor in subjects I have never taken (both of my previous organic chemistry clients finished the course with B grades, and a number of lower-division USD students would not have completed business calculus without my assistance).

Edit practice/page setupEdit

For people who want to work in isolation then bring a fully-fleshed-out draft article to a journal, try setting up your own private wiki at the Scratchpad Wikia. It's like your own private wikipedia, without the biting administrators... Just call your mini-wiki anything involving math, and trust me, everybody will leave you alone.

Google warningEdit

Thee are others in the real world who show up on Google with my same first and last names and middle initial. None of these persons are me, as I have never done anything of note or notoriety that anyone has found on Google. There is sufficient information on me at the above-mentioned Wikipedia user page to differentiate me from Google notables.

Academia projectsEdit

Being new, I am being bold in organizing.

July 13, 2007, guilty verdicts in US v. SDG&E mean I will be busy for the next year or so... for the clever in California, the streets are paved with gold.

Submission templates and startup pages; category linksEdit

Journal-submitted articlesEdit

I will be following a pattern of associating an article for submission to a journal by manually including [[Category:journalname]] in the associated article. Once I have managed to not lose the file on associating it with a journal, I will submit it before announcing its submission at other Academia Wikia journals. I will make PDF copies available off-site, probably in a subdirectory of a2zresource.freehomepage.com or at some Yahoo Groups website because I am basically cheap and operating on a low budget as an extended anthropological experience in guerrilla programming.

TestingEdit

As an aid in developing articles from scratch, I am working on the following as a proposed template at {{Outline}}

Code for using above & generating a category box below:
{{Outline | firstauthor=A name goes here | hypothesis=Idea goes here | journalname=Journal name goes here}}

The template includes a category box for the journal, as outlines would be visible during development to interested journal users for comment.

To increase traffic in this Wikia, it seems important to include more useful article development tools to encourage the creation of more journal articles, especially those that encourage collaboration and comment from the earliest stages of article development. The outline template should be used from the formulation of a working thesis to the article's consensus acceptance as a preliminary draft, so that the outline template is replaced with the preliminary draft template by its first author. If there is consensus acceptance of the preliminary draft, this should ease the way for the article to be approved for eventual publication.

To aid in concensus article development, it would be a good practice to include likely references during the creation of article outlines.

  • American Psychological Association (2001). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association. ISBN 1557988102

Since the Wikia ISBN feature does not include WorldCat access, I have no problem with using external links to WorldCat with or without a displayed ISBN:

  • American Psychological Association (2001). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association. WorldCat

If there are templates here for {{cite book}} and others, I haven't found them yet.

Reviewer's Score cardEdit

This part will change.

A cursory look at some articles listed as preliminary drafts shows a wide range in article quality. As these are intended to be included in journals where acceptable peer review is the standard for publication, I will be developing a score card of my own for rating preliminary draft and submitted articles. Things I will be looking at will include the following:

  • Title page (Exists? Usable? Good form or mangled?)
  • Body pages (Readable? Too much unexplained jargon? Too focused on "over-educated" audience or not otherwise accessible to readers without advanced degrees? Rule of thumb: Will reading the article make this former Mensa member's eyes glaze over? Use of wikified text helps to mitigate my view of writing to a specialized graduate audience.)
  • analysis of available facts
  • usage of visual aids to understanding
  • synthesis of justifiable conclusion (Does article educate the reader/elevate the reader's thinking?)
  • References (which might be optional in exceptionally written, truly original research)
  • quality (Are sources reliable? Stable? Findable? Primary, secondary or tertiary sources?)
  • appropriateness (Too much reliance on blogs, non-featured Wikipedia articles and other informal sources?)
  • integration (Do the citations and references make logical sense, given the text of the article?)
  • Overall presentation
  • declared Journal fit (Does article seem appropriate for Journal of first author's choice?)
  • quality of presentation (Would I expect to see this article included in the typical peer-reviewed journal found in a univeristy research library?)

As I have written some things that made others' eyes glaze over (see wikipedia:Abstract family of languages, wikipedia:Epsilon calculus or wikipedia:Realizability and note lack of discussion), I will try to be not too harsh on writers, having had some extensive practice in tutoring prep English/research at a local California community college.

New Journal NurseryEdit

Note to Self: "Your new journal" must be replaced in all places within this section after the following sentence with the text of the name of the journal that is to be created. The value of journalname will then be the name of the journal that is to be created. To "renew" the nursury, copy the following text from the Template Journal page on creating new journals.

Create this page: Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management
Copy this into your new page: {{New Journal|journalname=Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management|description= }}
After the second "=" enter a short description of your journal.

Create this page: Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management:Instructions for authors
Copy this into your new page: {{New Author Instructions|journalname=Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management}}

Create this page: Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management:Title Page Outline
Copy this into your new page: {{New Title Page|journalname=Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management}}

Create this page: Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management:Article Content Outline
Copy this into your new page: {{New Article Content|journalname=Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management}}

Create this page: Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management:Instructions for reviewers
Copy this into your new page: {{New Reviewer Instructions|journalname=Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management}}

Create this page: Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management:Submitted elsewhere
Copy this into your new page: {{New Submitted Elsewhere|journalname=Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management}}

Create this page: Template:Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management
Copy this into your new page: {{New Journal Marker|journalname=Journal of American Independent Studies of Comprehensive Emergency Management}}
